Casa Bianca – Fried Eggplant Pizza

// Visited: 07.09 //

Like many other LA residents, I love resident Pulitzer-winning food writer Jonathan Gold.  I’ve been poring over his Counter Intelligence reviews in the LA Weekly since I was 10.  But I have to say I don’t always agree with his reviews.

For years, I noticed his inclusion of Casa Bianca Pizza Pie in Eagle Rock on his annual list of 99 Essential Restaurants.  His rapturous descriptions of its eggplant pizza intrigued me, and I gave the restaurant a permanent bookmark in my brain, in a small file titled Must Try Next Time I Find Myself in Eagle Rock. (To be perfectly honest, I must say that there are no other restaurants on that list.)

Casa Bianca

I got there early, so early that I strolled down the street and investigated some frozen yogurt snack options.  Yet all I could think about was glorious chunks of fried eggplant fused with cheese, tomato sauce, and chewy crust into a Jonathan Gold-approved slice of lusty deliciousness.

The restaurant itself was charmingly homey and down-to-earth; pure Italian-Americana.  Red-checked tablecloths, yes!

The pizza? tasted like someone rolled out a buttery biscuit dough and covered it with marinara sauce, cheese, and slices of fried eggplant, and baked it until it was crisp as cardboard.

Was it tasty?  It was certainly FINE.  But one of the Essential Restaurants in LA?  To include Casa Bianca, but not, say, Olio Pizzeria’s excellent pies?  I respectfully disagree, Mr. Gold.

Try it if you happen to find yourself in Eagle Rock, but don’t go out of your way to eat there.

(J.Gold also placed Mother Dough of Silver Lake on his 2011 Essentials list.  Find out how I feel about that choice in a forthcoming review!)
