Chez Les Anges: Christmas in Paris

// Visited: 12.25.09 //

Christmas in Paris!  ¡Feliz Navidad!  Joyeux Noel?  Ah, whatever.  My friend J. and I decided that such a proposition sounded sufficiently girl-trip romantic.  We’d fly, from opposite coasts (I from the West, she from the East), land in Paris on Christmas Day, and somehow, somehow, get to a restaurant in time for a late and (hopefully!) delicious Christmas dinner.

This was an ambitious plan.

One problem with this plan: a lot of Paris restaurants are closed at Christmastime.

Another problem: the popular restaurants that are open on Christmas often book up quickly.

Fortunately, my annoying persistence in emailing restaurants paid off.  In the process of trying to obtain reservations for one well-regarded restaurant (Au Bon Accueil; fully booked), we found reservations for its lesser-known sister restaurant, Chez Les Anges.

The ambiance was mellow and unpretentious, perfect for helping us forget our after-flight jitters.  (Also helpful: our glasses of cheap Champagne.)  My terrine of venison was nearly faultless: deliciously hearty and full-flavored (did I taste clove?), chunky with meat and the rare piece of gristle.  As for my main course, I was overly optimistic in ordering the calf’s liver, which ended up being far too much organ for me.  To this day, I remember feeling disturbed by the crunchy, fleshy/fatty texture of the liver, and I was unable to finish it.

Ordering sins were quickly remedied by desserts of vacherin (meringue wafers sandwiching Crème Chantilly and berries), and baba au rhum, a yeasty sweet cake served with oranges and cream.  And yet more glasses of cheap Champagne; always, more cheap Champagne.  J. and I had traveled many miles for our Christmas dinner, and, finally, we were sated.

Merry Christmas! Welcome to Paris!
