Tongue Sandwich @ Attari Sandwich Shop

When eating tongue, as with eating all organ meats, I find it necessary to ignore the slightly-anxious thoughts racing through my mind — such as, “THIS WAS ONCE LOLLING AROUND THE MOUTH OF A COW!” or “I CAN SEE THE TASTEBUDS ON THIS PIECE OF TONGUE.”  I just feel like if I choose to eat animals, I should buck up and be willing to eat all parts of the animal.  I have a responsibility to be close acquaintances with the whole animal.

All those disclaimers aside, the tongue sandwich at Attari Sandwich Shop in Westwood was delicious.  It was moist and tender, with a good blend of flavors without being too salty, and just gamey enough to be interesting.

It was almost enough to make me forget I was eating a vehicle used to shovel grass (oh, who am I kidding, industrial feed) inside a cow’s mouth.  Almost.

Disappointingly, Attari’s famed lentil soup (Ashe-Joe) tasted predominantly of dill and salty broth.  It’s not often I like a tongue dish more than a lentil dish, but I’m ready and willing to be surprised…
